⌈ CHARACTER SECTION

Character: Rosemaster
Age: At least 500,000 years
Canon: Cucumber Quest
Canon Point: After her "death" at the end of Chapter 3

Background: Rosemaster is the fourth of the seven creations of the Nightmare Knight, the Cucumber Quest universe's resident antagonist/reluctant dark lord. Her only goal in life: to defeat the Legendary Hero that arises with the Nightmare Knight every five-thousand years, allowing the Nightmare Knight (and the "master" that revives him every cycle) to conquer Dreamside.

Though she was initially created in a male form with male pronouns, known as "Thornmaster," she eventually sought to transition into a feminine form under the name "Rosemaster" - the Nightmare Knight was the first to show her this acceptance and magically changed her apperance, causing her to have (nearly) undying loyalty for him.

Rosemaster claims that she was destructive and chaotic and says to the Nightmare Knight that she desires to return to those days. However, the reality is that she does not desire either chaos or destruction - she looked out at the people of her home, the Flower Kingdom, and what she saw are people happily enjoying their lives, their families. She wondered why she wanted to hurt them in the first place - what purpose did destruction really even serve for her? Due to this realization, she developed a conscience.

But like the Nightmare Knight himself, and due to her aforementioned loyalty, she felt she had no choice but to continue playing the role of a villain. Time and time again, she came up with schemes to defeat the Legendary Heroes, schemes that always failed for reasons she didn't understand. She felt responsible for all these failures, which fatigued her greatly - but she was also determined to make the Nightmare Knight happy, to give back to him what he did for her, so she refused to ever give up.

This all comes to a head in the third chapter of Cucumber Quest, The Flower Kingdom, where her sister and fellow Disaster Master Glitchmaster reveals to her the shocking truth - it is the Nightmare Knight himself that has been sabotaging her and her siblings' schemes. Appearing surprised and angry at this realization, she hatches a scheme with Glitchmaster to use the "Hocus Crocus" - a magical artifact that enhances its users power by twice the numbers of years it has grown - to defeat the Nightmare Knight.

However, the truth is that she has no desire to defeat the Nightmare Knight. She betrays Glitchmaster, using the power of the Hocus Crocus to weaken her, and then goes to face the new Legendary Hero and his party on her own. It is entirely a performance, the "performance of her career" - she has no plan to win. In spite of the Nightmare Knight's apparent "betrayal," she is so loyal to him that she trusts absolutely in whatever reasons he has for defeating her plans over and over.

As planned, she "dies," the party member known as Carrot defeating her with the power of his love for the Princess of the Doughnut Kingdom.

This moment, the moment of her "death," is where she will be taken from.

Personality:

"Fourth of the Nightmare Knight's minions. An elegant lady with a flair for the dramatic and a fiercely loyal heart. Gets really into dating sims." - Gigi D.G., Game Masterz

Rosemaster, on the surface, appears to be a stereotypical femme fatale, a Hollywood starlet made manifest into what seems to be a villain. She is first and foremost "collected" and "calm" (or, as the creator of Cucumber Quest describes her, "elegant"), almost never letting things openly phase her despite the roiling emotions within her. She has an exceedingly polite, almost blaise, attitude, approaching most situations with a light touch of humor or sarcasm - even her insults are veiled under this air of politeness, to the point where it's hard to even recognize them as insults.

Another aspect of this part of her personality is "smugness." While not arrogant, she often plays the part of arrogance - it's a natural part of her seemingly not being phased by anything, a natural part of herr "femme fatale" attitude. She presents an attitude of being above-it-all that makes it hard for her to read. It even even be said that she's "deceptive" in how she hides her emotions behind this smug mask.

Of course, Rosemaster has much more depth than this. In reality, she is many things. One of them is "kind," or in other words, "peaceful." Her kindness can be seen in how she treats her Roselings, her magical minions - she is shown again and again to treat them with empathy, respect, and love, never harming or abusing them. It is as if they were her children, and they love her in return like she was their mother. Her peacefulness can also be seen in how she has a "conscience" and is increasingly distraught at having to do harm to others - very much unlike her brothers Noisemaster and Splashmaster, who relish in doing harm to others and have no qualms about casualties.

She was also very "loyal," to the point where she is willing to do harm to others in spite of her peacefulness, even children like the Legendary Hero and his companions, even her own allies like Peridot and Glitchmaster. Despite her apparent kindness, she loved the Nightmare Knight for accepting her as a woman, and she was willing to put up with any indignity, with ninety-nine defeats, even willing to disobey her conscience, if it meant helping the Nightmare Knight accomplish his goals. Her loyalty even caused her to betray Glitchmaster and her plans to defeat the Nightmare Knight, because her loyalty causes her to trust the Nightmare Knight absolutely.

However, her loyalty has been replaced with "anger." Though she doesn't let her anger show openly, not even to her sister Glitchmaster, she is furious at the Nightmare Knight for lying to her for so long. She says that the cycle of Legendary Heroes, of her playing the role of the villain, will end with her final performance, with her last "death." This shows that, for her calmness and politeness, she is also capable of a quiet, burning fury.

Mostly, however, she is much like the Nightmare Knight in that she is "fatigued." She tires of the performances, she tires of the villainy, she tires of having to hurt others, she tires of failure after failure. She tires of having to hide her true emotions, her true feelings, from the world. Sometimes this becomes outright "despair" - her mask falling away into sadness when she's alone (or thinks she's alone).

All in all, she is a complex, hard to define character who appears on the surface to be a mashup of various villainous tropes... but, as the most sympathetic so far of the Nightmare Knight's Disaster Masters, she is generally a good, kind-hearted person, and not even that deep down.

Abilities:

Rosemaster, true to her name, has complete control over plants. *Complete* control, including even over people that are just named after plants! She can use this complete control to generate flowers, giant thorn-covered vines, and other plant life, which she can use to attack her enemies or defend an area. But she can also use it to manipulate others - if someone is named after a flower or even a flowering plant, like "Violet" or "Dahlia," merely possessing the flower in question is enough for her to manipulate their memories at will, to the point they can't even remember their friends or their actions. When given enhanced power, such as by the Hocus Crocus, she can even mind control people with flower names to attack their allies, can put people (including those without flower names) to sleep, and can change her form at will into a giant "boss" form known as Super Rosemaster.

However, like the Nightmare Knight, her power is dependent on fear. As long as the Nightmare Knight is present in the game, that fear is the fear of the Nightmare Knight himself. If the Nightmare Knight is weak, she is weak, and even finds it difficult to maintain her form. If the Nightmare Knight is strong, she is strong, and has access to most of her canon abilities. She may have a lot of trouble if the Nightmare Knight were to disappear altogether... but, unlike in canon, she won't die from this. She'll just become sick for a while. After that sickness, her abilities would instead be based on fear of her, which could cause some interesting complications...

In canon, Rosemaster cannot truly die. If she is "killed," she turns into one of the eight Disaster Stones, not dissimilar to how Gems in Steven Universe turn into their respective gems upon death. This still applies in Empatheias - the Disaster Stone is what she turns into upon "death", but she will respawn as normal and face all the same penalties of death as other characters.

Rosemaster also has access to a Roseling, a small and extremely loyal rose-like minion. A Roseling is about two feet tall and has no eyes, but it "sees" through detecting disturbances in the ground. It can be used as a sentry or used to attack, at which point it will extend its vine-like arms and use them to constrict or harm enemies. It doesn't really have a lot of use on its own, but Rosemaster treats her Roselings like her own children and cares for them deeply, which is why they are so loyal to her.

Alignment: Sosyne. "Calm" is one of her primary emotions - she nearly always approaches things calmly and keeps a level head even in the most dire of situations. But another emotion she feels is "anger" - anger at the Nightmare Knight for lying to her is foremost among that emotion.
